Gothic horror consists of novels and tales that developed as a reaction to the Age of Reason by Thomas Paine, and dominated English literature from 1764 with The Castle of Ortanto by Horace Walpole into the early 19th century. The characteristic theme of gothic horror is the stranglehold of the past upon the present or the encroachment of the dark ages of oppression upon the enlightened modern era. Enclosed and haunted settings (castles, crypts, convents, mansions), gloomy images of ruin and decay, episodes of imprisonment, cruelty, and persecution are used to express this. This essay looks at how Stoker creates an atmosphere of mystery and horror in Chapter 2, which is written in the first person and forms part of Jonathan Harkers journal. The use of personal pronouns throughout allows emotions to be conveyed strongly, by directly addressing the reader, making them feel they are part of the story. The chapter opens with Stokers use of grandiose language, evident in quotes such as great round arches which creates a sense of gothic splendour, and an atmosphere of great age and history. As said above, this typifies the genre of gothic horror. In the second paragraph, Stoker uses the simile His hand actually seemed like a steel vice that could have crushed mine to describe the driver, creating an impression of great, monstrous strength. Steel is cold and unfeeling, and the word vice shows Harker is now trapped here. The idea of being trapped is later developed through the words a great door, old and studded its strength illustrates that it is made to keep something in, or out. The repetition of the words massive, great, and large when talking about the building adds to the sense of gothic splendour. When the trap and all disappeared down one of the dark openings it shows that he is all alone. The walls are described as frowning. This use of personification exemplifies the unwelcoming nature of the castle. Dark window openings seems to defy the natural order, windows are supposed to give out light, yet here they give out darkness. It shows darkness has won the battle against the light in this place. Personification is further used when Harker states I felt doubts and fears crowd upon me which reiterates the feeling of oppressiveness. Stoker then uses rhetorical questions to emphasise Harkers confusion. Harker describes his experience as a horrible nightmare which is used to create an atmosphere of horror. A nightmare is when all your worst fears are played out, fears too strange to be real and too terrible to articulate. The fact that Harker feels he might be asleep shows how horrible the events are. He feels he will wake up with the dawn struggling in through the windows; this uses personification to show the battle between light and dark. The light is being stopped from reaching him. That Harker feels he must wait to wait the coming of morning also uses light imagery, but this time the light is used to show hope. In the next paragraph Stoker uses onomatopoeia with lines such as the sound of rattling chains and the clanking of massive bolts to herald the ominous presence of Dracula. It also draws the reader in by creating a picture in our minds. This portrays strong emotions, as the reader visualises himself in that situation.  We now come to the first descriptions of Dracula. He is clad in black from head to foot, without a single speck of colour about him anywhere. This is symbolic of the blackness of his soul. He has a long, white moustache which together with his black clothes uses colour imagery to portray that his character is lifeless, there are no real colours about him, only monochrome. Dracula is described as an old man and is holding an antique silver lamp. This gives an impression of great age. This lamp throws long quivering shadows using personification to make the darkness seem alive. Also, the lamp is said to give out shadows, showing the ever lurking presence of darkness. Dracula welcomes Harker with a dramatic statement Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own free will! This highlights that Harker enters of his own free will. Dracula is described as standing like a statue, as though his gesture of welcome had fixed him into stone. emphasizing Draculas lack of emotions he has a heart of stone. Harker then shakes Draculas hand, which seems cold as ice, more the hand of a dead than a living man, the simile suggesting something monstrous, he has no warmth in his soul. When Dracula asks Harker to leave some of the happiness you bring it suggests there is great sadness in the place. The fact that Harker feels that Dracula may be the driver whose face I had not seen creates an atmosphere of mystery, why did Harker not see the drivers face, and who is this person at the doorway? Pathetic fallacy is used when Dracula says the night air is chill, the chill of the night reflecting the chill of Draculas soul. References to gothic architecture with lines such as up a great winding stair again emphasize the sense of gothic splendour. They enter a well-lit room with a great fire of logs, Stoker uses to keep the readers attention with a series of anticlimaxes. The warmth and sanctuary of the room also forms a stark contrast with the chill horror of Dracula himself.  We now come to the second description of Dracula. His face is described as a strong, a very strong, aquiline and he is said to have bushy hair that seemed to curl in its own profusion, his ears were pale and the tops were extremely pointed. This animal imagery gives a cruel, wolf-like impression of the protagonist. Dracula is said to have sharp, white teeth which protruded over the lips. This gives an impression of fangs, he is monstrous. He is said to be of extraordinary pallor, the paleness hints towards death and bloodlessness. It also reiterates the impression of great age. His paleness shows he does not go out into the sun, instead hiding in the dark and the shadows. Draculas hands are said to have hairs in the centre of the palm giving a beastlike impression. Having hairs in the palm of your hand is also said to be a sign of madness. His nails are long and fine, and cut to a fine point almost as though they are claws. This conveys the idea of violence, as well as again reiterating the beastlike impression. His breath is said to be rank giving an animal like impression, as if Dracula is a carnivore. This also gives a picture of sickness and death hanging around him. Dracula is said to have a grim sort of smile showing the reader he has no real emotions.

Rivalry Between Beijing vs. Shanghai Beijing and Shanghai are arguably China’s two most famous and most important cities. One is the center of government, the other the center of modern commerce. One is steeped in history, the other is a glittering tribute to modernity. You might imagine that the two fit together like yin and yang, complimenting each other, and maybe that’s true... but they also hate each other. Beijing and Shanghai have a fierce rivalry that’s been going on for decades, and it’s fascinating. What Shanghai Thinks of Beijing and Vice Versa In Shanghai, people will tell you Beijing ren (Ã¥Å'â€"ä º ¬Ã¤ º º, â€Å"Beijingers†) are arrogant and uncouth. Although the city is host to more than 20 million people, Shanghai’s denizens will tell you they act like peasants- friendly, perhaps, but blustery and uncultured. Certainly not as refined and fashionable as Shanghaiers! â€Å"They [Beijingers] smell like garlic,† one Shanghai resident told the LA Times in an article on the rivalry. In Beijing, on the other hand, they’ll tell you that Shanghai people only care about money; they’re unfriendly to outsiders and selfish even among themselves. Shanghai men are said to place too much importance on business while being impotent pushovers at home. Shanghai women are supposedly bossy dragon ladies who push their men around whenever they’re not too busy spending their money shopping. â€Å"All they care for is themselves and their money,† a Beijinger told the LA Times. When Did the Rivalry Originate? Although China has dozens of huge cities these days, Beijing and Shanghai have played a major role in China’s culture for centuries. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Shanghai clearly had the upper hand it was the center of Chinese fashion, the â€Å"Paris of the East†, and Westerners flocked to the cosmopolitan city. After the revolution in 1949, though, Beijing became the center of China’s political and cultural power, and Shanghai’s influence waned. When China’s economy was opened up following the Cultural Revolution, Shanghai’s influence began to rise again, and the city became the heart of Chinese finance (and fashion). Of course, it’s not all macroeconomics and geopolitics. Although denizens of both cities would like to believe their cities are more influential, there is also a grain of truth to the stereotypes and jokes that get passed around; Shanghai and Beijing do have very different cultures, and the cities look and feel different. The Rivalry Today These days, Beijing and Shanghai are considered mainland China’s two greatest cities, and although the government being located in Beijing means that Beijing will probably have the upper hand for the foreseeable future, but that hasn’t stopped the two from competing. The Beijing Olympics in 2008, followed by Shanghai’s World Expo in 2010, have been a great source of fodder for comparative arguments about the virtues and faults of the two cities, and denizens of both will argue it was their city that put on the better show when they were on the world stage. Of course, the rivalry also plays out in professional sports. In basketball, a match between the Beijing Ducks and the Shanghai Sharks can be counted on to be contentious, and both teams are among the best in the league historically, though it has been more than a decade since the Sharks made an appearance in the finals. In soccer, Beijing Guoan and Shanghai Shenhua duke it out for bragging rights each year (though again, Beijing has had more recent success than Shanghai in the league). It’s unlikely that Beijingers and Shanghaiers will ever see totally eye to eye. It’s worth noting that the Beijing versus Shanghai feud sometimes even extends the ​city’s expatriate communities, so if you’re looking for a Chinese city to live in, choose wisely.

The least effective pH buffer to use in a Catalase reaction would be a pH of 2. 8, although there may be more inhibiting pHs outside the range used in the experiment. The longest reaction was for the pH 2.8 and the smallest rate of reaction was also, therefore pH 2. 8. Moving up the pH range used in the experiment, the rate of reaction continues to increase until the optimal point of pH 6. 3, where the rate of reaction slows and average time taken begins to increase above this point, as shown in the pH 8. 3 results and graph. Evaluation: Overall, the experiment was conducted in a suitable way that enabled the collection of relatively reliable results; however as with most experiments there were some sources of error in its conduction that will have had an effect on the results. The main error in this experiment was the factor of human error; this was mainly present in the measuring and timing stages of the experiment. The measurement of the buffer solutions, hydrogen peroxide and cutting of potato discs will have had slight discrepancies in their quantities; this will have had a small effect on the results as the enzyme and substrate amounts will have varied and the rate at which products are formed will have increased or decreased. To eliminate human error in the experiment the measurements and timing would have to be done by using more technological equipment, in order to gain precise results. Another factor that will have influenced results is the presence of inhibitors when the reaction took place; these occur naturally and can be either competitive or non-competitive: A competitive inhibitor molecule has a similar structure to the normal substrate molecule, and it can fit into the active site of the enzyme. It therefore competes with the substrate for the active site, so the reaction is slower. A non-competitive inhibitor molecule is quite different in structure from the substrate molecule and does not fit into the active site. It binds to another part of the enzyme molecule, changing the shape of the whole enzyme, including the active site, so that it can no longer bind substrate molecules. Non-competitive inhibitors therefore simply reduce the amount of active enzyme; similar to decreasing the enzyme concentration. In conclusion, the presence of these inhibitors will have altered the reaction by increasing or decreasing the rate at which the products are produced. There will have been limitations in the results as the range of buffer solution pHs used in the experiment were inadequate to determine an exact optimal pH for the enzyme Catalase to function. To find the optimal pH, further tests could have been conducted by using pHs with closer intervals within the range of 4. 5 and 6. 5, where the rate of reaction increases sharply, as shown on the graph by an arrow. By analysing the results and the graphs that were produced, there are no obvious anomalies in the results achieved; however there may have been a slight discrepancy in one result which is marked on the graph/s with a circle. This could have been a consequence of any of the factors mentioned above in the evaluation section.

Every story has a conflict. A conflict is a disagreement, which usually provides the plot for a story. The conflict is the basis for everything else included in the work of literature. Usually a person reads the story to see how a conflict is developed and then resolved. This essay, as already states, will be about psychological conflicts. In the epic tale, The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, there are many psychological conflicts involved that all weave together. The conflict I want to focus on, though, is the conflict between the character Boromir and his inner desire to use the Ring for the greater good of his kingdom, namely himself. At first glance, he seems a harmless man. But as the story progresses, so does his infatuation with the Ring. â€Å"†¦And Sam saw that while the others restrained themselves and did not stare at him, the eyes of Boromir followed Frodo intently, until he passed out of sight in the trees at the foot of Amon Hen.† Boromir was fighting his mind, deciding right then and there to seize the ring from Frodo. He followed Frodo and at the top of Amon Hen began to talk to him, taking on the guise of a friend. But suddenly he snatched for the Ring, failed in his attempt, and ultimately died valiantly defending Merry and Pippin, two other hobbits, from orcs. He redeemed himself a t the end, but the harm was already done. He had lost the battle with his conscious, and in doing so made the rest of the journey so much more difficult for the rest of the Fellowship. Another great example of a psychological conflict is in the story â€Å"Leiningen Versus the Ants† by Carl Stephenson. Leiningen’s Brazilian plantation was being attacked by a huge host of army ants. At first glance, the major conflict seems to be an environmental type, man pitted against his environment. But if you look deeper, you will find that the main conflict is between Leiningen and his pride-filled mind. He knew he was a smart man, and he thought that by using his intellect he would be able to keep the ants away. This quote is a good illustration of Leiningen’s pride, his ‘enormous intellect’. â€Å"Even here in this Brazilian wilderness, his brain had triumphed over every difficulty and danger it had so far encountered. First he had vanquished primal forces by cunning and organization, then he had enlisted the resources of modern science to increase miraculously the yield of his plantation.

Manging Time as an Adult Learner Essay

Being able to manage time as an adult is sometimes very difficult. Learning how to defeat this speed bump is truly easier than it looks. There are many types of learning, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. The following essay will show you the simple ways of making learning easier and more fun for adult students. Motivation is generally defined as the force that compels us to action (Scuderi, Royale 2012). Finding the motivation to learn is hard for several students. There are several ways to get motivated to learn. The first step for a student is to master their motivation. To accomplish this you create a vision of who you want to be, and then live into that picture as if it were already true (Chandler, Steve 2001). The problem with self motivation is that it is directly affected by age, marital status, and many other factors. For example, a single adult could have trouble focusing on work due to thoughts of weekend activities; where as a married adult may be focused on family time. Motivation is very important in everyday life. There are 6 different types of motivation that can be used by adult students. The first type incentive is when a person is expecting to gain some type of reward in exchange for their accomplished goals (Scuderi et al. , 2012). The second type is fear and is often used when the incentive fails to work (Scuderi et al. , 2012). The third, achievement, goes along with human nature, because people are driven to achieve goals and be the best at what they do (Scuderi et al. , 2012). Growth is the fourth type and is defined by the need to improve and expand knowledge (Scuderi et al. , 2012). The fifth type of motivation is power. According to Scuderi (2012); â€Å"the motivation of power can either take the form of a desire for autonomy or other desire to control others around us† (para. 7). The sixth type of motivation is social. This type is used by persons desire to be accepted by a specific peer group or to relate to people in their sphere of influence (Scuderi et al. , 2012). Knowing the types of motivation is important to learning, however, now it is up to the individual person to choose what type works for them. To find out what type to use is based on the social status of the person. For example, a single adult would use a different type of motivation than a married adult. Age and life experience would also be a part of the way an adult learner motivates themselves. No one can tell an adult how to motivate themselves, that is something they have to figure out themselves. The next step in preparing for college as an adult is figuring out what style of learning to use. According to Blackett & Weiss (2011); â€Å"A learning style can be defined as how you take in information, process it, and learn it† (ch. 3). The next thing to do is identify the different types of learning. The first and most common learning style is visual. Around 40% of all learners are visual learners (Blackett, K. & Weiss, P. 2011). If a student is a visual learner, they are likely to watch videos, look at pictures or graphs, even watch the body language of the instructor (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). The next type of learning is the auditory learner, this covers about 30% of all learners (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). These students learn best by listening to lectures or verbal directions as well (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). A helpful tip for students that learn by listening is to bring an audio recorder to class. The last type of learning is the kinetic/tactile and covers around 15% of all learners (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). These types of students learn best by hands-on work or physical activity (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). A few ways to prepare for class with this type of learning is to; do your assignment more than once or work on one subject at a time (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). Since the types of learning have been discovered, there has to be a way to ind which one works best for the individual student. Do not worry; there is a way to find out by taking a simple test. Upon completion of the test, the student should know what kind of learning style fits them best (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). It is possible to have more than one learning style too. No matter what style of learning students use; these styles can change based on your personality and environment. If a student stil l has trouble learning then the student should turn to a tutor (Blackett & Weiss et al. , 2011). Now that we have learned the different types of motivation and learning, it is time to learn some tips to help as an adult learner. They prefer to be self directed, they have accumulated a broader spectrum of life and work experience, they are goal and relevancy oriented, and they have a greater sense of immediacy than the typical high school graduate. A student should always treat their study time like it is class time (xponents. com, 2012). In modern times, if a person is considered a â€Å"multitasker†; more than likely that individual is looked up to. However, multitasking as an adult student can miss important information or even getting things mixed up (xponents. com, 2012). The next tip that can help you is to teach what y ou have learned to another person. It is helpful because it translates information into the persons own words and gauges others interpretation of what you have presented (xponents. com, 2012). Lastly, always look to keep learning and trying new things. A person’s brain is like a muscle, if it is not worked out enough then it can become weak (xponents. com, 2012). Students should always look to better themselves. The last bit of advice this paper will give the adult student is how to take college as a military service member. The kind of life style soldier students live can make it hard to be successful. While in the military, a student can pursue a degree or professional certification while at home, at sea, or even from a remote duty station (Military Advantage, Inc. 1999). Most of the time that soldiers are taking college courses, it will be online learning. Here are some tips to set a soldier up for success. The courses can be given by internet, video, audio, or print. So they need to make sure to test the components needed before the class starts (Military Advantage, Inc. 1999). Preparing for the class can be difficult. Single or married a soldier should talk to their roommate about certain quite times in order to complete the assigned work (Military Advantage, Inc. 1999). When the soldier is in a virtual classroom, they should still act like it is a real class room (Military Advantage, Inc. 999). The last thing is to be sure to get the course materials in advance (Military Advantage, Inc. 1999). Time management is a must for a soldier student. Married or single, the soldier needs to set up a regular study schedule that includes breaks (Military Advantage, Inc. 1999). Just because the soldier is taking online classes does not mean they cannot get tutoring, so do not try to learn everything alone (Military Advantage, Inc. 1999). If the student happens to be married then make plans with the spouse to take over some the chores around the house (Military Advantage, Inc. 999). Set aside some time on the weekend to spend with the kids or spouse, and plan ahead so there is no last minute cramming (Military Advantage, Inc. 1999).
